Demolition begins at half-finished hotel

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — On Wednesday, crews could be seen bulldozing parts of a half-finished hotel that has been a source of controversy in north Charlotte.

Construction stalled at the Courtyard Marriott hotel at the corner of Statesville Road and W.T. Harris Boulevard two years ago.

Property owners said the building failed to pass most code inspections in summer 2013, which led to a dispute between them and the builder. Construction came to a halt in September 2013.

For more than a year, the unfinished building and dirt parking lot, filled with trash bags and chain link fences, greeted drivers on one of Charlotte's busiest roads.

Some people who live in the area came out to watch it torn down.

"Everybody is going to be glad to see something done with it," said Gary Lowe.

Eyewitness News contacted a representative for the developer Wednesday but did not immediately here back. It's unclear what is next for the property.
