CHARLOTTE, N.C. — University City is in the process of undergoing several changes, which will affect businesses and streets.
In just a few weeks, about a half-dozen stores, including Old Navy, Petsmart and Ulta, will open in the Belgate Shopping Center near IKEA.
University City Partners Executive Director Mary Hopper is excited about the changes in retail, but said it brings a new set of challenges.
Many businesses, including Hobby Lobby and Marshalls, are moving from their old locations, leaving behind large, vacant store fronts.
"Nobody likes to see something be empty," Hopper said.
Soon, drivers will also see more traffic on IKEA Boulevard, which is why developers and Charlotte officials are expanding it. Eventually, the roadway will connect with the Lynx Blue Line Extension.
Hopper said University City Partners will launch a study on what to do with the vacant businesses.
