A Charlotte-area couple says a TSA-approved coffee maker never made it to Las Vegas with them after agents removed it from their checked bag.

Paul Gosselin told Action 9 attorney Jason Stoogenke his wife likes her coffee. They were off on a flight to Vegas. He didn’t want to end up in the doghouse, so he packed his wife’s 48-ounce Keurig coffee maker.
After all, TSA says it’s OK to bring coffee makers on flights, according to the agency’s online list. TSA also says everything is subject to the agency’s final decision.
The Gosselins checked in the bag. It wasn’t a carry-on. When they unpacked in Sin City, he thought he had committed a major sin right then and there.
“I said, ‘Oh man, I forgot the coffee pot on my bed at home or something. I’m going to get killed,’” he said.
Then he saw a note in his bag: TSA saying they confiscated it.
“I couldn’t believe they removed it because I check all the lists and we’ve flown to Greece with the coffee pot. We’ve flown to Aruba with a coffee pot and never had an issue,” he said.
TSA emailed Action 9, “Following multiple explosives compound alarms on a single-cup coffee maker in a passenger’s checked baggage, the item was removed and a note placed in the bag to notify the passenger that it was removed by TSA officers. This was all done in the presence of an airline representative.”
Gosselin didn’t fight it.
“Like I told my wife, trying to submit a claim for a coffee pot through the government,” he said, smiling.
All jokes aside, the lesson here: No matter what you pack, make sure it’s on the approved list. But still know that TSA can veto that.
