POLKTON, N.C — An historic cemetery in Polkton received some care over the weekend.
Anson County’s Burnsville community asked for the public’s help to clean up Poplar Springs Cemetery after it became overrun with weeds.
Volunteers removed weeds, overgrown brush and placed wooden crosses along the headstones.
Channel 9′s Genevieve Curtis went to the cemetery earlier this month, where she found the historic designation had gone into disrepair. The graves date back to the 1700s and include those of slaves, civil war veterans, and World War veterans.
Organizers told Curtis that many people reached out, saying they had family connections to people buried there. They are working on tracing genealogy and connecting families to their ancestors.
