Voter registration deadline closes in as midterms approach

CHARLOTTE — Friday is the last day to register to vote before the November 2026 midterms.

North Carolinians have until 5 p.m. to ensure their registration is active and up to date if they want to vote on Election Day.

The midterm general election will take place Tuesday, Nov. 3, but in-person early voting starts next week on Oct. 15.

If you miss the deadline, you may still be able to vote. You can register in person at the polls if you vote early. The in-person early voting period ends at 3 p.m. on Oct. 31.

For same-day registration, individuals must fill out and sign the North Carolina voter registration application and bring proof of residence. According to the State Board of Elections, voters registering during this period must have lived in the county where they’re registering for at least 30 days before Election Day. Eligible documents need to show the voter’s current N.C. address, like a driver’s license, a copy of a bill or paycheck or documents issued by colleges and universities.

The only thing you can’t do in person is change your party affiliation.
