Walmart beats Harris Teeter again for local grocery dollars

CHARLOTTE — Walmart Inc. remains in the top spot when it comes to where shoppers are choosing to spend their grocery dollars in the greater Charlotte area.

That’s according to Chain Store Guide’s latest Grocery Industry Market Share report, which was released this week.

Walmart Supercenter stores claimed a 21.3% market share in metro Charlotte in 2020, down slightly from 21.6% in the previous year. The year ended with 28 Walmart Supercenter stores across the region, one fewer than in 2019.

And that’s not including two other brands that fall under the Arkansas-based Walmart umbrella. Sam’s Club, with its seven local stores, had a 6.1% grocery market share here, while Walmart Neighborhood Market had a 1.7% share spread across eight stores.

Walmart Supercenter in 2019 jumped past homegrown retailer Harris Teeter in the local battle for grocery spending. Harris Teeter fell to No. 2 that year, a spot it held onto in 2020.

The Harris Teeter banner, owned by Cincinnati-based The Kroger Co., captured a combined 17.8% market share in the Charlotte region last year. The report showed 16.7% of that market share came from 61 stores operated by the Matthews-based Harris Teeter subsidiary. The remaining 1.1% — covering two stores — was attributed to Kroger.

That compares to a 19% market share and 64 stores, also combined figures, in 2019. The Harris Teeter subsidiary accounted for 17.9% of that amount and 62 stores, with the rest falling under Kroger.
