DALLAS, N.C. — Water is now flowing in Dallas after a 10-inch water main break early Wednesday morning, but officials have implemented a boil water advisory for the town for the next 24 hours.
According to the town, the water system is currently refilling.
They asked residents to turn off all faucets, spigots and outdoor taps to help speed up the process.
The Town of Dallas will update once the water is fully restored.
Water was temporarily cut off, and Lower Dallas Road was closed due to the incident which happened around 1:30 a.m.
“(The pipe is) just old, so it bust loose and the water drained completely out of it, so we had to shut down the water plant,” said Mayor Hayley Beatty.
It took about 9 hours to repair the line.
The water main break has led to periods of low or no pressure in the distribution system, increasing the potential for back siphonage and introduction of bacteria into the water system.
“It’s definitely a grave impact, and I hate that this is happening,” said resident Krystal Robinson.
She is worried about her mother.
“She just got done doing radiation treatment for her lung cancer and you know she needs water and those people that have oxygen tanks,” Robinson said.
Mayor Beatty said they already had an agreement to connect with the city of Gastonia in an emergency.
Gastonia Water helped refresh the depleted water tanks at the water plant in Dallas.
It took a few hours to get dry lines flowing again.
As a precaution, a boil water advisory will be in effect once water service is restored. Residents are advised to boil all water used for human consumption, including drinking, making ice, brushing teeth, washing dishes, and food preparation, or use bottled water until further notice.
