CHARLOTTE, N.C. — More than a dozen Charlotte condos are damaged after a pipe burst, flooding a Dilworth building early Thursday morning.
Eyewitness News was at the scene on East Boulevard around 5 a.m. when firefighters rushed to clear the water out.
A few hours later, restoration crews ripped out drywall and had dozens of fans running to dry out carpets.
Vi Lyles rushed to her daughter's place after a panicked morning phone call.
"She said, 'Oh mom, I can't believe this happened. A water main broke down the hall and I have a big job to do at work today,'" Lyles said.
Lyles said her main concern is that water may be behind the cabinets and could cause mold.
"Her hardwood flooring is starting to come up, and it's wet and damp," she said.
Crews used her daughter's condo to dry out the rest of the hallway by running a pipe through the unit to drain water over the balcony.
"First thing we do is get everything dry and test it to make sure we are where we need to be," said Dick Young of Southern Restoration and Construction. "Then, we start the repair project."
While the units are still livable, Young said it could be a week before his workers start repairs.
The pipe that burst was in a common area of the building.
Lyles hopes her daughter's HOA will cover the cost.
Businesses inside the building, including several doctors' offices and 131 Main restaurant, were not affected.
