WAXHAW, N.C. — A Waxhaw police officer is recovering after he was hit by a car while directing traffic Wednesday morning.
According to a release from the town, it happened around 6:40 a.m. at the intersection of Highway 75 and Rehobeth Road.
Officials said the officer stopped traffic on Waxhaw-Marvin Road and Highway 75 to allow drivers from Rehobeth Road through, but a driver ignored his stop instruction and drove into the intersection, striking him at a low speed.
The officer was taken to the hospital with minor injuries. Town officials say he is expected to be ok.
The driver who hit him was charged with failing to comply with direction from a law enforcement officer.
Due to limited staffing, the Town of Waxhaw says the intersection will not be covered by an officer for the remainder of the morning.
The police department is reminding drivers to slow down and pay attention when traffic control officers are working.
