CHARLOTTE, N.C. — In a virtual board meeting, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools Board of Education passed a local emergency leave plan Tuesday that can award up to 80 hours of paid leave for eligible staff.
It applies to hourly workers, non-exempt employees serving in a full-time or part-time capacity and addresses the issue of reduced hours for staff who are unable to work remotely.

Officials said staff can get paid. It can also be used by hourly employees who have to be quarantined, are caring for a family member impacted by COVID-19 or need to be at home watching their child. This paid leave can be applied retroactively.
The CMS board decision is in addition to the emergency-leave plan that the state board of education passed Friday, which allows up to 168 hours of paid leave between April 1 and April 30 for eligible staff.
For those wondering if this applies to you and what the conditions are, officials said they will send out a comprehensive email to all employees and that would include a toll-free number you can call for questions.
