Who are North Carolina’s highest-paid state employees?

RALEIGH, N.C. — North Carolina more than 81,000 state government employees, over 180 of whom make at least $200,000 per year.

From psychiatrists to investment managers to transportation engineers, the state’s median annual salary for over 55,000 full-time permanent employees is $52,741.

The state’s highest-paid employee is Valerie Hillings, director of the N.C. Museum of Art. Her base salary is $336,274.

Also among employees bringing home the biggest paychecks are the state’s co-chief investment officers, Jeff Smith and Christopher Morris. They both rank in the top 20, along with their colleague, Craig Demko, director of private equity.

About 65% of those earning more than $200,000 work in the medical and mental health fields.
