CHARLOTTE, N.C. — From protests to politics, Braxton Winston is known for a viral photo of him raising his arm in front of police officers during last year’s protests after an officer shot and killed Keith Lamont Scott.

Winston recently dropped off his two kids at school when he realized former first daughter Chelsea Clinton mentioned him in a tweet.

Clinton’s tweet, directed at President Donald Trump, has been liked and retweeted thousands of times.

“My phone started going crazy, and I was really taken aback,” Winston said.

“Mr. President, Braxton Winston is a superb example of an actual 'very fine' person ... please learn more about him," Clinton's tweet said.

"I'm not sure how she found it, but it was an interesting experience,” Winston said.

Winston was recently voted to fill the city council at-large seat. He's a familiar face, as most recognize from that photo capturing the unrest after the Keith Scott shooting in Charlotte in September 2016. The picture resurfaced in Clinton's 280-character tweet after Winston's election day victory.

"It really has resonated to people all over the city, the state and the nation,” Winston said.

Winston said he will be focusing on finding ways to create better-paying jobs for more people in Charlotte, develop safe and secure communities and make the government more accessible.

"We're going to find ways to include more people in the conversation, to give them the opportunity to feel this is an inclusive community,” Winston said.

This week, leaders from around the country will meet in Charlotte for a city summit. The conference is scheduled for Wednesday through Sunday at the Charlotte Convention Center.
