Woman recounts crashing into frozen creek after winter storm

ALEXANDER COUNTY, N.C. — There were several crashes in and around Charlotte Friday morning because of black ice but on Thursday morning the snow caused even bigger problems, including a crash that sent a young couple into a frozen creek in Alexander County.

Channel 9's Dave Faherty was able to speak with the woman who was trapped in the car with her husband.

Candace Shuler said her husband offered to drive her to work because of the snow that had fallen across the Foothills.

The couple's SUV went off of Hubbard Road and slid down the hillside before overturning into the water.

"I was screaming his name. I was freaking out," she said. "I was so scared."

Shuler said her husband was initially knocked out by the crash and she remembered the water being very deep and she started screaming.

"It was halfway full of water. It was cold and it was deep and I was standing on the driver's door with glass so I could have just fallen in real easy," Shuler said.

When her husband regained consciousness he called for help and then the two worked together to get out of the vehicle. By then, some other drivers and local firefighters had stopped to help.

Shuler said fortunately the water never got into the overturned SUV. She was able to return to work Friday. She said she's giving thanks to everyone who stopped to help.
