Women don scrubs, steal jewelry from nursing home patients

CARY, N.C. — Police in Cary, North Carolina are hoping for the public’s help in identifying two women who are posing as nursing assistants in order to gain access into nursing homes and steal resident’s jewelry.

The first suspect is described as white or Hispanic, 25-35 years old, 5’1” to 5’5” tall, with medium build and dark hair. On surveillance video her hair was pulled into a ponytail and she wore sunglasses on her head.

Police said the second woman is of a similar race, height and build, is roughly 45-55 years old and wore a train conductor-style hat with glasses and spoke with a heavy accent.

The incidents happened at two separate locations on July 4. In both cases the women, wearing hospital scrubs, entered the resident centers and went door-to-door checking for unlocked apartments, targeting jewelry.

Neither wore any type of official identification and residents who encountered the women described them as polite and friendly. There were no reports of injuries in either case but the stolen property is estimated to be valued in the tens of thousands of dollars.

Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the Town of Cary Police Department at (919) 469-4012 or file a report anonymously with Cary Crime Stoppers at (919) 460-4636.
