CHARLOTTE, N.C.,None — The president and CEO of a behavioral health facility for children is speaking out after an employee was arrested and accused of raping one of the teen patients.
Craig Bass told Eyewitness News that Quentin Campbell, 25, was hired in June 2007 and had passed all employment background checks with a clean record.
Campbell was a behavioral health counselor who worked weekends monitoring six children, ages 5 to 14, in one of the several small cottages at the facility.
In mid-August, a teen boy in Campbell's care reported a sexual assault to another staff member, according to officials at the facility.
Bass said the facility launched an immediate investigation into the allegations and discovered Campbell had failed to follow routine policies and procedures, but he would not elaborate on which rules were broken.
Bass also said his investigation was unable to determine if a sexual assault occurred.
Police arrested Campbell on Saturday and charged him with multiple counts of statutory rape and sex offenses with a child older than 6.
Bass said nearly 60 percent of the children at the facility have suffered some sort of abuse in the past and said the center's goal is to ensure their safety.
"That's a top priority for us. We are here to keep kids safe," Bass said.
Bass said the facility has notified all parents and continues to work with the teen's family.
Campbell remains in the Mecklenburg County Jail with bail set at $210,000.
