Man arrested after estranged wife found dead

CHARLOTTE, N.C.,None — A man was arrested Sunday at his Charlotte home after his estranged wife was found dead at the dog kennel she owned in Bostic.

Theresa Hartley McCraw, 58, was found dead on Saturday morning at her business, Mountain View Kennels. She was shot to death, according to the Rutherford County Sheriff's Office.

McCraw's estranged husband, Michael McCraw, was named a person of interest in the beginning of the investigation and then became the primary suspect, the Sheriff's Office said.

On Sunday, the Rutherford County Sheriff's Office and the SBI conducted a search warrant at McCraw's apartment on Farthington Circle. McCraw arrived there during the search and was taken into custody on a separate charge, the Sheriff's Office said.

A warrant for murder was later issued for McCraw, who is currently in police custody, the Sheriff's Office said.

Michael McCraw's neighbors at the apartment where he was arrested were shocked when Eyewitness News told them that he had been arrested.

Betty Lopez lives next door to McCraw and said he had told her to come clean his house Monday morning. She said she got no response when she knocked on his door and assumed something was wrong because she saw police outside his apartment late Sunday.

"Yeah, it is surprising," Lopez said.

Deputies in Rutherford County told Eyewitness News that the McCraws had some history of domestic violence.

A neighbor who lives near the kennel where Theresa McCraw's body was found said, "We kind of thought it was him," referring to McCraw's estranged husband. "We just didn't know for sure."

The Rutherford County Sheriff's Office said it will take McCraw into custody from local police but are not sure when.
