Man to spend 14-17 years in prison for sex crimes

CHARLOTTE, N.C.,None — A man will spend 14 to 17 years in prison for sex crimes against women.

Carl Walden was in court on Tuesday and pleaded guilty to indecent liberties with a minor and first-degree sex offense.

Prosecutor Kelly Miller said he's a menace now off the streets.

"He was basically trolling for victims," Miller said.

Miller said Walden attacked a 20-year-old woman at gunpoint and also a 14-year-old girl.

In that case, the girl told police she was walking along Freedom Drive when Walden offered her a ride. Once in his car, she said, he pulled a gun and told her he'd been watching her at her school bus stop. She said he then began fondling her until she jumped out of the moving car and ran to call police.

After that story aired on Eyewitness News last January and video was shown of Walden's home, a 20-year-old woman recognized it and told police Walden has sexually assaulted her there in 2010.

When police searched that home, they said they found a collection of bizarre items inside, including a listing of the names of the victims of convicted serial killer Henry Louis Wallace, stacks of women's underwear and pornographic videos with titles like "Brutally Raped."

Eileen Rosado said the apartment was strewn with those DVDs, condoms and women's underwear when she moved in after Walden was arrested.

"That's a monster. It's not human," Rosado said. "Whatever he gets he deserves it. Maybe more."

Prosecutors said Charlotte is safer after Walden's sentencing.

"Absolutely, a serial rapist is off the streets tonight thanks to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department," Miller said.
