CHARLOTTE, N.C.,None — A 3-year-old boy is still in the hospital after being hit by a car Thursday night and now, his mother is pleading for the driver who put him there to come forward.
Naqonna Blakeney told Eyewitness News on Friday that her son, Qshawn, has been taken off a breathing tube because he is able to breathe on his own. She said he has some stitches and bruises on his face but no broken bones.
Blakeney said she is furious that the driver of a white Cadillac took off after hitting her son and hopes that police can find him.
"I was just hysterical, like any other mother would be," she said. "It just, like, happened so fast."
Blakeney said she and a group of other mothers and children were holding hands, crossing Monroe Road from a bus stop. Then, her son broke away from them.
"Some of my other friends were like, 'Nooo!' And then all of a sudden, boom," Blakeney said. "I ran to my baby, in the middle of the street."
Police said the driver of the white Cadillac pulled over, and he and his two female passengers even got out for a moment before driving away.
Volarrio Dillihunt, who was biking past at the time, said he tried to stop them by blocking the parked car with his bike, but said it was unsuccessful.
Dillihunt said he rushed to Blakeney's side. He said she gave him a phone number and asked him to called Qshawn's father.
"He was shocked, he screamed in the background, 'My son got hit by a car,'" Dillihunt said.
Blakeney said what she's asking for from the community is simple -- prayer for her family and help for the police.
"If they've got any leads, please do the right thing," she said.
Police said part of the Cadillac's license plate may read "ZXT." They are asking anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
