For nearly 3 decades Muggsy Bogues still giving back to Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — In 1988 a 5 foot 3 inch point guard was taken by the Hornets in the expansion draft and moved to the Charlotte area.

Muggsy Bogues hasn't left and continues to give back to his community..

This week in Matthews, for the 28th straight year, Bogues is holding his annual kids basketball clinic.

After nearly three decades and thousands of lives affected, Bogues has lost count but he hasn't lost his passion..

"We work on kids attitudes their self-esteem. It's more than basketball for me I want kids to feel good about themselves," Bogues said.

The life lessons are what's important to Bogues. With him being 5 feet 3 inches that didn't stop him from a 14-year NBA career.

Bogues inspires campers like 11-year-old Kyle Frazier, who is at his fifth camp.

"He teaches us that if you can be as small 4 foot 2 (inches) and you can still play basketball and still be one of the best," Frazier said.

"It makes me think that if he did it than anyone else can do it," said 9-year-old camper Celia Rossi.

Rossi is attending her third Bogues basketball camp. Repeat business is common for Bogues.

Some of his assistants, who are now playing college basketball, are former campers as well. Now it's their turn to give back

"That's what it's all about coming back giving back, understanding the importance of the kids and inspiring and continuing to make sure they feel good about themselves," Bogues said.

Lessons Bogues won't forget to teach even if he forgets how long he's been teaching.
