New curfew rules for children and teenagers in Charlotte take effect Thursday.

The stricter rules are aimed at keeping kids safe, police and city leaders said.

Under the new curfew rules, children 12 years old and younger have to be home by 10 p.m. each night, and 13-, 14- and 15-year-olds must be home by 11 p.m. Any youth out past the curfew must be with an adult who is at least 21 years old.

Police Chief Rodney Monroe said the curfew doesn't mean officers will be out rounding up children.

"If we see situations, if we see areas (that) are of concerns to us, for kids being out past 10 p.m. or 11 p.m., we'll employ the curfew at those times," he said.

Monroe wanted the curfew changes in place by New Year's Eve.
