New Effort To Save Church's Sign In West Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, N.C.,None — Eyewitness News uncovered a new effort to save a well-known Charlotte sign.

City leaders may knock down Cannon Cathedral in Wesley Heights in west Charlotte. If the city tears down the building, another church, Garr Memorial, wants to save the "Jesus Saves" sign on the roof.

City leaders say that's fine with them. They just want to make sure the city isn't liable if something goes wrong. City leaders even passed around a memo, saying taking the sign down would be "an imminently dangerous operation" that "could have unintended consequences for the building and any adjacent properties."

Council member James Mitchell Jr. represents Wesley Heights. He said, "The city's concerned about safety."

Doretha Weathers-Scott understands the city's concern. She lives near the site and said, "It's like the stuff is just ready to fall any minute. I mean it's in terrible shape."

Eyewitness News called Garr Memorial to see how the pastor plans to keep people safe. He said the church which owns the Wesley Heights property (and the sign), New Bethel Church, told him not to talk to the media.

Charlotte has a group dedicated to historic preservation projects just like this called "Save Our Signs." We called those advocates. They asked us for details on the situation, but would not go on camera either.
