New York To Charlotte Bus Line In Trouble Again

CHARLOTTE, N.C.,None — City Code Enforcement inspectors have issued new warnings and citations against a bus line that carries passengers back and forth to New York City.

Two buses operated by Blue Sky Express rolled into Charlotte this morning and stopped in locations police and city inspectors say are illegal.

One bus parked in a vacant lot outside Sugar's Family Restaurant which has been closed for weeks. Another dropped off passengers in the parking lot of a Days Inn across West Sugar Creek Road.

Neither location has the ticket counter, waiting room and bathrooms required by the City of Charlotte for bus terminals.

Blue Sky Express was cited earlier this summer for similar violations after picking up and dropping off passengers in the middle of a parking lot at the Asian Corners Shopping Center on North Tryon Street.

An inspector for the North Carolina Highway Patrol grounded one of the buses today for having brake lights that didn't work. The driver was also cited by the city for operating in an unapproved location.

City Code Enforcement officials say they're frustrated by the failure of the bus lines to comply with city rules. "It's a moving target," said Ben Krise.

Krise said he plans to brainstorm with other city officials and police to find a better way to enforce the city's ordinances. Police agree for the need for tougher enforcement.

Sgt. Ken Schul said, "Either they need to be a legitimate business, or we need to shut them down."
