CHARLOTTE, N.C.,None — Staff members at a Charlotte Mecklenburg elementary school are the subject of an investigation after a 6-year-old student was able to walk off campus.
The student, Nakia Williams, attends an after-school care program at David Cox Elementary, but on Wednesday, police found her ready to cross the street at a busy intersection.
The girl's mother, Conchetta Williams, said she was still shaken by Wednesday's incident.
"[I] opened the door and it was two detectives," she said.
The detectives told Williams her daughter had just been found walking along David Cox Road and trying to cross the busy intersection at Sugar Creek. She had walked nearly a quarter-mile from the elementary school.

"I was upset [and] got real nervous," she said. "I kept calling the school, trying to find out what's going on."
But a full day later, Williams said she hasn't been told anything about how her young daughter was able to walk away from the school, and why staff members didn't stop her.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg police started the investigation, but have since turned it over to school investigators.
CMS Chief Bud Cesina said questions still surround the incident.
"Our investigation will be both from an internal matter and a criminal matter," Cesina said.
Cesina said detectives will look at whether there was criminal neglect on the part of the school, in addition to a possible breakdown in procedure.
But until she gets answers, Williams said she will remain troubled.
"Anything could have happened to my child," she said. "She's only 6 years old."
Williams said she kept her daughter home from school Thursday.
CMS investigators plan to talk to the principal of David Cox Elementary and any staff members who were involved.
