Police: Hundreds Of Pounds Of Pot Smuggled Into Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, N.C.,None — More than a quarter-million dollars worth of marijuana was smuggled into Charlotte, Gaston County police said.

SLIDESHOW: Police Find 266 Pounds Of Pot

A drug-sniffing dog was drawn to beams at YRC Shipping Company on Reames Road, police said. Inside the beams, investigators said, they found 266 pounds of marijuana. The drugs were packed so tightly that investigators had to use battering ram to knock them out.

Police said they found the name of Carson Hyde, a tree trimmer from west Charlotte, on the shipping paper. He was arrested and is being held in the Gaston County Jail under a $300,000 bond.

"If I am putting myself in the place of somebody sending this much, I'm going to ship it to somebody I trust," said Capt. Curtis Rosselle with the Gaston County Police Department.

SLIDESHOW: Meck Co. Mug Shots, March 29 – April 4

Police in Charlotte used a shipping bill to determine that the beams were shipped by someone Brownsville, Texas. The beams were stopped in Charlotte but were headed to a lot just north of Mount Holly.

Police in Charlotte warned Gaston County police.

"We got to believe was destined for Gaston, Lincoln, Mecklenburg, Union -- our area," Rosselle said.

Federal agents are looking for the person who shipped the drugs to the area.
