Police Investigate Apparent Murder-Suicide In Shelby, NC

SHELBY, N.C.,None — Police in Shelby said a man and woman died in an apparent murder-suicide Saturday morning inside a house while their two young children were there.

The victim's mother said there were warning signs in the past.

"I knew that one day, or one night, I would get this kind of phone call," Karon Barrow said.

That call for Karon Barrow came early Saturday morning, when she heard something was wrong at her daughter's boyfriend's home.

Police came to the Churchill Drive home after a 911 hang-up, and found the boyfriend threatening to kill himself. They have not released his name.

Officers calmed him down and said he told them 21-year-old Karon Bernice Barrow was shot inside the home. The couple's 4-year-old and 6-month-old daughters were also inside, unharmed.

Officers said that led to a standoff with the boyfriend, but police were able to get the children out. A short time later, officers heard a gunshot.

They went inside to find both Karon Bernice Barrow and the boyfriend dead.

"They have no parents," Barrow said, when referring to her grandchildren. "They have a grandmother, which is me, and I will be there for them."

Barrow said her daughter's boyfriend had a violent past, and feared something bad would happen.

She said she could never get through to her daughter like she wanted to.

"The Lord warned me for this right here," she said, "but I never knew it would happen this soon."
