GASTONIA, N.C.,None — A Gastonia man told police he was attacked by a man with a golf club and a knife.
Gastonia Police Officer J.L. Smith was on patrol when he saw a man covered in blood. The man told the officer that he was involved in a fight with Johnny Ray Johnson when Johnson tried to hit him with a golf club, according to an arrest warrant affidavit.
The man avoided being hit with the golf club, but Johnson then pulled out a knife and stabbed the man in the cheek, according to the warrant.
The man was taken to Gaston Memorial Hospital where he got stitches for the wound and treated for a broken wrist.
The altercation happened June 19 at 143 S. Proctor St., Johnson's residence.
He was arrested, charged with assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury and held on a $5,000 secured bond.
Johnson, 45, is a convicted felon. He has been several prior convictions involving larceny, breaking and entering, DWI and assault on a police officer.
