Q: Address: A: 1925 Chestnut St. Extension High Point, NC 27262
Q: How long have you lived in North Carolina's 6th district? A: All my life until they recently changed the lines; I now live several streets over into the 12th district
Q: Family A: Husband, Bryant of 38 years; 4 children (Bryant married to Teresa; Melissa married to Brian Weavil; Joey married to Jennifer; Nancy married to Brian Auman) Yes, we have a Bryant, Bryant, Brian and a Brian in the family!
Q: Education: A: BA in Education from HPU (1973) ; M.Ed. from UNC-G (1976); M.B.A. and Ph.D. (Business) (1996) from Century University)
Q: Previous political experience: A: Campaigned vigorously against the ERA because felt it should be a state's right; In Raleigh and in Washington
Q: Previous professional experience: A: Have taught at all grade levels, including college and adult seminars. I have run my own business; I have run a consulting firm and most recently, for the past 8 years I have been running Union Square, a Furniture Showroom Building where tenants lease space to show their products twice a year at furniture markets. The owners are out of state and I am in charge of all operations in the building year-round.
Q: Community, Political and Religious organizations in which you are involved: A: In the past have been involved in Chamber of Commerce groups and events with my church. This is the first attempt at political office.
Q: Your campaign website address: A: www.votehinson.com
Q: Why are you running for congress? A: I began to notice, two years ago, Congress was taking liberties with our basic rights. I began reading each night at Thomas.gov what members of the House and Senate were doing each day while we paid them to be in Washington. Many of the Bills they were passing were a ridiculous waste of time and money. There were many hidden agendas and no explanation of exactly what they intended to do with exorbitant amounts of money. The Constitution must be upheld.
Q: What are the greatest challenges facing people who live in North Carolina's 6th district and what would you do to address those challenges that would make voters choose you? A: Jobs and the economy! In some areas of the 6th District unemployment is 14 percent. How can President Obama think his Stimulus Package and Jobs Bills are successful when in NC we have unemployment at 14%? What is the answer – FairTax! Remove the corporate taxes and compliance costs so it is affordable to operate in the US and bring the corporations home. They can then compete in a global market with a competitive advantage and hire US workers. People have no taxes taken out of their pay check giving them more take home pay to save and spend. I would love the opportunity to talk in depth about this principle. (See this topic on my Issues Page.)
Q: What are the first changes you would work to implement if you are elected? A: Be a NATIONAL voice to propose a "We the People" Amendment to force changes on Congress. Those changes would include Term Limits, Bills with no pork or Piggy Backs, no junkets, no elite programs for Congress (i.e. Healthcare Bill vs. the Program that covers Congress Members), Bills that stand alone and are written in everyday language, 15% cut in salary for a government employees. 38 States passing these changes in their legislatures can force Congress to accept the Amendment.
Q: What prior experience do you have that best prepares you for this office? A: Business experience has prepared me fiscally to watch every penny! Through business experience I have learned how to work with individuals both good and bad. Business has taught me looking back is a waste of time. Look at the present and future to solve the problem – how to fix the situation so it does not repeat itself. Educational degrees have prepared me to know how to research and find the answers. One never knows all the answers and it is the epitome of arrogance to assume so. My parents and church have prepared me to know right from wrong, be honest and just with my fellow human beings and have instilled other morals to guide my life. No one has a life free of challenges but we all learn from our challenges. My parents taught me to honor and value the principals this country is founded upon. They taught me to always stand and cross my heart when the National Anthem is played – to repeat the Pledge of Allegiance with pride. Anything I do not know like Robert's Rules - I can learn, but the important things, have been bred into me since I was a child. I am well prepared for this office.
Q: What is the toughest criticism you think you will face in this election, and what is your response to that criticism? A: I just answered that question.
