MCDOWELL COUNTY, N.C.,None — Prison officials say a correctional officer will possibly return to work Monday, two weeks after an inmate stabbing left him hospitalized.
Brad Davis, 32, who is employed at Marion Correctional Institution's close-custody unit on Old Glenwood Road, was admitted to Memorial Mission Hospital in Asheville with a punctured and collapsed lung, according to Detective Sgt. Rick Gutierrez of the Marion Police Department.
Prison Administrator Duane Terrell said Davis spent three days in the hospital but has made a rapid recovery and is planning a return to work Monday.
The incident occurred at approximately 9:40 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 12.
The inmate, 35-year-old Joel M. Cliett, was outside of his cell cleaning the floors. Cliett told Gutierrez he mistook Davis for another guard and stabbed him between the shoulder blades with a shank, a homemade knife, according to the detective.
Charges against Cliett are pending further investigation.
The inmate is serving a 29 ½-year sentence for first-degree sexual offense.
