CATAWBA COUNTY, N.C.,None — An off-duty Huntersville police detective who was killed in a car crash on July 5 was drunk at the time, according to a toxicology report.
Kimberly Nesbitt, 43, died when her car ran off Lowrance Road, just south of the city of Catawba. No other vehicles were involved in the crash, the North Carolina Highway Patrol said.
Nesbitt's blood-alcohol level was .22 when she wrecked, according to the North Carolina Medical Examiner's Office. North Carolina law considers a driver legally intoxicated with a .08 blood-alcohol level.
Troopers said Nesbitt wasn't wearing a seat belt when she crashed.
Nesbitt's crashed car was found at about 6 a.m. on July 5, but investigators don't know exactly what time the crash happened. They do know that Nesbitt was involved in a minor accident with another driver earlier that morning. In that incident, troopers said Nesbitt exchanged information with the other driver after bumping into the back of the vehicle and then she left.
