Richmond County nonprofit receives free Toyota as part of '100 Cars' event

RICHMOND COUNTY, N.C.,None — Griffin Toyota presented a new Toyota Sienna Mobility to Sandhills Children's Center on Tuesday morning as part of the Toyota 100 Cars for Good program.

The school, which services children with various developmental disabilities from birth to age five, will use the new vehicle to transport students in wheelchairs and with other physical disabilities to therapy appointments, community events and field trips.

"We were overwhelmed by Toyota's generosity and the tremendous community support that enabled us to win a new Sienna Mobility van," said Melanie Carnes, director of center services for Sandhills Children's Center.

The Toyota 100 Cars for Good program has awarded 100 vehicles over the course of 100 days to 100 deserving non-profit organizations nationwide based on votes from the public.

100 Cars for Good was launched as a Facebook-enabled philanthropy initiative which engaged supporters of these charities through its Facebook application. Each day for 100 days, five organizations were profiled on the Facebook page and the one with the most votes at the end of the day was awarded a car.

The 400 runners-up each received $1,000.

"Our community is truly blessed to have Sandhills Children's Center take care of our kids and we are honored to help in support of Toyota's 100 Cars for Good program," said Clint Ray, Griffin Toyota general manager. "What really makes this especially important for Griffin Toyota is that one of our very own sales associates, Pat Campbell, has two children who attend the school and he is very involved in its charitable efforts."

Sandhills Children's Center aims to provide the highest quality service to children with special developmental needs. The center offers comprehensive services to nearly 400 children including transportation, skilled childcare, medical support services, and speech, physical, and occupational therapy.

More than half of the children enrolled come from low-income families.
