Shot Fired Into Car Outside Charlotte Office Park

CHARLOTTE, N.C.,None — A bullet hole shattered the back windshield of a car at a Charlotte office park Tuesday, barely missing the man inside.

The 23-year-old driver, who did not want to be identified, said the bullet came so close to hitting his head that the hair around his ear was brushed back as it went by.

The man said he was sitting in his car Tuesday morning, waiting to meet his mother, who works at a building on Mallard Creek Church Road. He said he saw a man in a suit walking toward him, holding a gun at his side.

"I could see the barrel (and) everything," the driver said. "He wasn't trying to conceal it."

Police now say that man was Jerry Bennett, a financial planner who works in the building.

Others who work there told Channel 9 that Bennett is very protective of his Corvette, which was reportedly double-parked four spaces away. They said Bennett had parked the car so that he could see it from his office.

The driver of the BMW that was shot into said he never went near the Corvette, but that Bennett came at him.

"He didn't come to just talk to me," the driver said. "I knew I had to get out of there."

The victim said Bennett stood like a professional shooter as he drove by, ducking for cover.

"(He) stood there for a second and took a shot," the driver said.

People who work in the building said they were stunned by the incident. The building also houses a pediatrics office and a camp for children.
