CHARLESTON, S.C. — A judge declared a mistrial in the trial of a former South Carolina police officer charged with murder in the death of black motorist.

The jury said Monday it was unable to unanimously agree on a verdict for Michael Slager. The judge had told jurors they could also consider a lesser charge of voluntary manslaughter.

Cellphone video of the shooting showed Scott running away when Slager fired shots at him.

One black and 11 white jurors discussed the case for 22 hours without reaching a verdict

Slager was standing trial for shooting 50-year-old Walter Scott to death in North Charleston when he stopped him for having a broken tail light.

Prosecutors said Monday afternoon that they plan to try Slager again.
