Speed, alcohol factors in crash that killed 2 in SW Charlotte

CHARLOTTE — Two people died in a car accident Sunday around 4 a.m.

According to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department, a 1993 Jeep Cherokee was traveling eastbound on West Arrowood Road.

The Jeep was traveling at high speeds as it entered a curve. The Jeep drove off the left side of the roadway into the center median.

Billy Blackwelder was driving. He overcorrected to the right and lost control of the vehicle. The Jeep traveled across both eastbound lanes of travel and struck a large tree head-on off the right side of the roadway.

Blackwelder and right front passenger Eric Morris were pronounced dead on the scene. The rear passenger, Kathleen Copenhaver, was taken to Carolinas Medical Center.

CMPD said speed and alcohol were contributing factors to the accident.
