CLAY, W.Va. — A West Virginia mayor has resigned after coming under fire for commenting on a Facebook post that referred to first lady Michelle Obama as an "ape in heels."

After the election of President-elect Donald Trump, Pamela Ramsey Taylor, director of the Clay County Development Corp., reportedly posted a status that said, "It will be so refreshing to have a classy, beautiful, dignified First Lady back in the White House. I'm tired of seeing a Ape in heels."

The post was quickly deleted, but not before at least one user managed to capture a screenshot. According to ABC, the post was shared hundreds of times before it disappeared.

The Associated Press reports that Beverly Whaling, the mayor of Clay, commented, "Just made my day Pam."

According to the AP, Whaling resigned Tuesday, and the Clay City Council vowed to pick a replacement soon. Taylor has been placed on leave, the AP reports.
