CHICAGO — When a Chicago mother fatally stabbed her 5-year-old daughter, the girl’s older sister was watching and tried to intervene, prosecutors said.
According to WBBM-TV and the Chicago Tribune, Simone Austin, 27, is facing a first-degree murder charge after Chicago police said she stabbed her daughter, Serenity Arrington, in an East Garfield Park home Saturday morning. The girl was taken to a nearby hospital and pronounced dead, authorities said.
At a bond hearing Monday, prosecutors said Arrington’s 8-year-old sister, whom Austin had told to get out of the room, witnessed the stabbing through a doorknob, WBBM reported. Investigators said the older girl screamed and grabbed Austin’s hair in an attempt to stop her from killing Arrington, according to the news outlet.
Prosecutors said the 8-year-old then fled shortly before Austin emerged from the home with Arrington’s body, the Tribune reported.
Authorities arrested Austin, who was denied bail Monday, according to the news outlets.
