GRAND RAPIDS CHARTER TOWNSHIP, Mich. — Seizing on a quote from Martin Luther King Jr., students from a Michigan Elementary School sent their own dream of peace to honor the slain civil rights leader.
Each of the 700 students at Knapp Forest Elementary School in Grand Rapids Township created a feather will a message of love and kindness, WZZM reported.
The feathers were shaped into wings for the schoolwide art project, the television station reported.
The wings are displayed in the school’s main hall, which has the main message of, “I can soar with kindness by ...," the television station reported. Some of the messages on the feathers that complete the thought read, “think of others before yourself,” and “accepting others’ differences."
Priya Marok, a member of the school’s PTO, said the project helps build on a “culture of kindness, respect and inclusivity,” while honoring the life and work of King, WZZM reported.
Above the project is a quote from King: “If you can’t fly then run. If you can’t run then walk. If you can’t walk then crawl. But whatever you do, you have to keep moving forward.”
Marok called the wings a “celebration of diversity,” WZZM reported.
