North Carolina woman killed by SUV after stopping to help crash victims

DURHAM, N.C. — A North Carolina woman was killed early Sunday after she was struck by an SUV while trying to help people trapped in their vehicle after a crash, authorities said.

Jasmine Harbison, 29, ofRaleigh, died shortly after 2:30 a.m. EST, The News & Observer of Raleigh reported.

According to the Durham Police Department, a 2011 Chevrolet Equinox that was pulling out of a parking lot collided with a 2018 Nissan Maxima, WTVD reported. The impact caused the Equinox to flip and land in the northbound lane of the highway, the television station reported.

Harbison and her boyfriend stopped to help the occupants of the overturned vehicle, the News & Observer reported. Harbison, who was standing on the left side of the Equinox, was struck by an approaching SUV, according to WRAL. The car that hit Harbison was a 2010 Chevrolet Equinox, the News & Observer reported.

Harbison died at the scene, the newspaper reported.

Police said the driver of the SUV that struck Harbison, along with the two people in the flipped Equinox, was taken to an area hospital, WTVD reported.

The crashes remain under investigation. Police said alcohol and speed are believed to be factors in the first crash, but alcohol was not believed involved in the fatal collision, according to the News & Observer.

Police have not decided whether charges will be filed, WTVD reported.
