Burke County Search and Rescue posted on Facebook, saying it was called to a report of an injured hiker on Shortoff Mountain just before midnight. The hiker was unable to move because their foot had been impaled by a tent stake.

Rescuers were able to reach the hiker by about 2 a.m. Friday, The Associated Press reported.

It took approximately eight hours to get the injured hiker down the mountain safely.
