ELPASO, Texas — Students are in a new world, learning remotely for the start of their school year. They have a computer, school supplies and internet access. But where will they work from?
Families are trying to set up learning areas for their children but do the kids work in their rooms or take over the dining room table?
One school district in Texas is taking it a step further, helping families set up school rooms in their homes.
The desks in the Ysleta Independent School District are sitting empty right now. But not for long.
The school district is giving away the desks to families who need them at no cost.
“Ysleta ISD made the decision to offer the student desks at no cost to its families because they were originally purchased with taxpayer money. The giveaway is one of several efforts that YISD is undertaking to help ease the transition to Online Learning at home and thank parents for creating learning environments in the house that are not only free from distractions, but properly equipped to help students succeed in their academics,” district officials told KTSM.
The school will hand out the desks Friday.
Parents will move the desks from the building into their vehicles. Staff will not be able to help, KFOX reported. They will also be required to wear face coverings.
