CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Some of golf's biggest stars descended on south Charlotte to play in the first round of the Wells Fargo Championship.

Thousands of fans are expected to crowd the Quail Hollow Club during the next four days.

The event is a huge boost for Charlotte. It's not just a golf tournament, it's an annual outing for most that come to the club this week.

Spectators from all over the state and country gather to watch the best in the world tee off.

Unlike other once-a-year events in Charlotte, the Wells Fargo Championship runs from Thursday through Sunday, which means golf fans from out of the area are getting hotel rooms, eating at local restaurants and spending their money in Charlotte.

"The first pro-am is on Monday. People come in on Sunday to be a part of that and then it's nonstop golf and other activities from sun up to sun down through the following Sunday. It's a full week on the calendar," said Bob Morgan, president of the Charlotte Chamber.

The tournament is sold out through the weekend, but event organizers are again offering the Mulligan Program, which are grounds tickets that have been purchased and can't be used but can be donated and returned to the club.

The tickets are then resold for $10 with all proceeds going to charity.
