NC high school cancels football game due to injuries

CARRBORO, N.C. — A North Carolina high school has canceled football because too many players have been hurt.

Carrboro High School announced that its Friday night game vs. Bartlett Yancey has been canceled due to an increased number of injuries over the past two weeks.

The school posted a message on its website saying the decision was based on the safety and well-being of the athletes.

The game will not be made up.

The school plans on continuing the season and will play Oct. 23 against Graham if enough players are healthy.

The Jaguars are coming off a 50-0 loss to Cummings and is winless (0-7) on season.

Just three years ago, Carrboro finished the season at 15-1 and lost in the state championship game against South Iredell.

The school is 3 miles from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Statement from North Carolina High School Athletic Association regarding the cancellation:

We are disappointed anytime a school has to make the decision to cancel a game due to lack of numbers of available player. On the other hand, we applaud a decision that-- at its very heart--has in mind the health and safety of the available players and those recovering from injuries. This is not a normal occurrence in North Carolina Football, although it does happen occasionally for the reasons mentioned.
