Team mom plays important role at Philip O'Berry

CHARLOTTE — Behind every high school football team is someone who works hard behind the scenes.

Philip O'Berry's football team mom, Angela Alston-Jenkins, does just that for the Cardinals. Even in the pouring rain, you can't cloud her team spirit.

Alston-Jenkins has a lot on her plate. She teaches engineering, she's a mother of two Berry athletes and also the football team mom.

"We're taking care of everyone so everyone feels like our children," she said.

At 6:30 a.m. on a Monday in the summer, you can find her with the team loading up for an away scrimmage. Fast forward five hours, and she is still there serving them lunch.

Alston-Jenkins dedicates about 20 hours a week to being a team mom. It is a lot of juggle, but there is no place she'd rather be.

"Inclement weather, whatever it may be. It's just a joy to see them out there and again, them seeing us support them as well," Alston-Jenkins said.

She said her biggest challenge is not being the team mom, but it is figuring out what she will do when the season is over.

"Now I have to figure out once my kids graduate and go to college, what am I going to do when I grow up," she said with a laugh. "Because you know, they've pretty much been my world."

Alston-Jenkins son, B.J., is a senior and plays defensive tackle for Berry. He also plays rugby and golf.

Her daughter, Brianna, plays softball at Berry. Alston-Jenkins said she is also a team mom for softball.
