FORECAST: Strong storms pass through, power outages remain in area

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — SUNDAY: Strong thunderstorms passed through the Charlotte area.

The threat of showers will continue through Sunday evening into Monday, which may include heavier downpours in some areas.

5 p.m.: Lightning arrives at Lake Norman, Mooresville, Davidson and Cornelius.

Severe weather threats will be low into the night.

5:30 p.m.: All thunderstorm warnings expired

4:35 p.m.: Severe Thunderstorm Warning issued for Cabarrus, Catawba, Iredell, Lincoln, Mecklenburg and Rowan counties until 5:15 p.m.

4:30 p.m.: Massive downpours and lightning northwest of Charlotte, about to spread uptown and north.

4:20 p.m.: Steele Creek area about to be hit with 40-50 mile per hour winds.

3:55 p.m. Severe Thunderstorm Warning issued for York, Mecklenburg, Gaston counties until 4:30 p.m.

3:20 p.m.: Heavy rain continued in the Myers Park area.

3 p.m.: Heavy downpours and gusty winds made their way through the Albemarle.

Power knocked out in Cabarrus, Mecklenburg, Anson counties

Nearly 15,000 Duke Energy customers were left without power in Cabarrus and Mecklenburg counties after strong storms brushed through.

More than 12,500 customers were affected in Cabarrus County as of 8:30 p.m.

A widespread power outage in Concord was caused by a fire at a Duke Energy delivery point, causing significant damage to both city and Duke Energy equipment.

Crews are working to restore power.

Significant repairs to both utility equipments are necessary and crews expect the work to extend well into the night, crews said.

As of 9:45 p.m. on Sunday, Mecklenburg County had more than 840 without power.

In Anson County, more than 1,300 residents lost power. Power is expected to be restored after midnight.

The 911 phone lines were also reported to be down in Anson County.

THIS WEEK: Storms will fire back up on Monday, especially right after lunch.

Strong winds will be possible, but torrential rain and even localized flooding will be the major threats.

Temperatures will reach the mid-80s.

There will be more sunshine by midweek and temperatures won't be as hot as highs will be in the low-80s.
