Forecast

  • The top weather story will be tracking additional downpours and the threat of a quick spin-up tornado early tomorrow before we gradually dry things out.
  • Isaias is no more, but the low itself will continue to throw showers at us from Alabama.
  • From now until midnight, we’ll continue to track on and off light to moderate showers.
  • After that, the air turns more tropical and unstable and could allow for a quick storm capable of producing a quick spin-up right before sunrise on Sunday.
  • After that threat tomorrow morning, conditions will gradually improve.
  • While we can’t rule out an additional quick downpour in the afternoon, the track should be good to go for the 400 Sunday afternoon.

Hurricane Isaias

  • Isaias is expected to bring heavy rain, gusty winds, and a small tornado risk to the Carolinas this weekend.
  • The storm made landfall with winds up to 105 mph Friday night near Destin, Florida, in the Florida Panhandle at 8:30 p.m.
  • At least two possible deaths are tied to the storm, one in Alabama and another in Florida.
  • Rain could reach the Charlotte area as early as Saturday morning, becoming steadier and heavier throughout the day.
  • Heavy downpours are expected to continue Saturday night into Sunday morning.
  • A line of stronger storms could move through around sunrise Sunday, bringing a very small risk of quick-forming tornadoes.
  • Rain should gradually taper off after the storms move through.
  • Charlotte could see 1 to 2 inches of rain, with higher totals possible in the mountains and foothills. Wind gusts could reach 30 mph in the Charlotte area, with stronger winds possible farther west.
  • The tornado risk remains low, but forecasters will continue monitoring conditions through the weekend.
