Man killed in hit-and-run while walking along Lancaster County highway

LANCASTER COUNTY, S.C. — A man was killed after he was hit by a car in a hit-and-run crash, South Carolina Highway Patrol said.

It happened Monday around 9:30 p.m. Troopers said the man was struck by an unknown vehicle on Great Falls Highway near Lymon Reece Road.

The driver of the vehicle then left the scene, according to the highway patrol.

The Lancaster County Coroner’s Office identified the victim as 33-year-old Joshua Britten.

His death stirred up outrage among many people in Lancaster.

“I think it’s very sad, it’s very sad, that somebody would hit somebody and just keep going and not stop,” Benita said.

Mike Gaskin said Britten was known to be near that area.

“He did walk this road a lot,” he said.

Gaskin said he used to work with Britten at a local restaurant. He said Britten was a nice guy and he doesn’t understand why anyone would do this. He and others are hoping answers come soon.

“It’s sad, it’s really sad,” Gaskin said. “I mean just stop. Check on him, call somebody, something.”

“I mean what if that was one of their family members that got hit?” Benita asked. “You know they would want somebody to stop and help them.”
