Courtney McCain, 36, turned himself in to Lancaster police early Friday morning. He has been charged with one count of accessory after the fact of murder.

Police told Channel 9 they believe McCain was driving the suspect vehicle and are still searching for the shooter. Investigators said at least two people were in the car, and that there may have been three.

The shooting happened around 8:20 p.m. at the Palmetto Place Apartments off Pardue Street, police said.

Detectives said Rakeem Patterson, 21, died at Springs Memorial Hospital and 22-year-old Markevis Foster died after being airlifted to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.

A third man was shot in the leg and suffered non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

All three were standing in a group outside the apartments when the shots rang out.

"I've been crying ever since he got killed," said Foster's mother, Angie Foster. "I saw him at the hospital last night. I kept touching his feet. He wouldn't wake up."

Patterson and Foster were best friends. Angie Foster told Channel 9 that her son tried to save Patterson.

"He went to see why his friend was laying on the ground because he got shot. Then he went to pick up his friend and he got shot too," Angie Foster said.

No motive for the crime has been released.

"I've been asked about motive. Can't really speak to that yet," said Lancaster police Chief Scott Grant. "Been asked about gang involvement. I'm not prepared to call this a gang-related incident at this time."

Channel 9 spoke to McCain's mother, who said her son wanted to turn himself in as soon as he knew police were looking for him. She told Eyewitness News that the car police seized that they believe was used in the shooting is hers.

"I feel real bad about Kevis and the other young man. My son didn't pull no trigger and killed nobody. He wouldn't hurt people," Cathy McCain said.

Meanwhile Angie Foster is urging the others involved in the shooting to come forward.

"They need to turn themselves in. Get this done and take this heavy load off of my heart," Angie Foster said.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call the anonymous tip line at 803-289-6040.
