CMPD investigating overnight robbery, shootout in north Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Police were investigating two different crime scenes related to a robbery and shootout overnight in north Charlotte.

Police received a 911 call around 1:45 a.m. about someone inside a black SUV that had been shot and driven to Garden Trace Court, near the Food Lion parking lot.

Investigators told Channel 9 that the shooting started somewhere else and that two men were actually shooting at each other.

They eventually found a second scene about 15 miles away on Mellwood Drive, where they found a maroon Crown Victoria that was riddled with bullets.

According to detectives, three suspects tried to rob a man on Mellwood Drive and ended up shooting at the victim. That victim then returned fire and hit one of the suspects.

That suspect ended up driving to the Garden Trace Court location and called 911, trying to make it sound like he was the victim of a robbery.

That man, whose name has not been released, was taken to Carolinas Medical Center but will survive.

Police told Channel 9 that the victim knew at least some of the suspects in this case.

No arrests have been made.
