CHARLOTTE, N.C.,None — Irene became the first hurricane of the 2011 season early Monday morning, and could hit the East Coast this weekend.

The forecast path of the storm has it making landfall around Charleston on Saturday morning, meteorologist Keith Monday said. It could bring heavy rain to the Charlotte area.

If the hurricane shifts farther eastward, the Charlotte area would see less of an impact, Monday said. The forecast is highly subject to change depending on Irene's track.
