CHARLOTTE — Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department are investigating a fatal crash that happened early on Sunday morning in south Charlotte.
Just after 2:40 a.m., officers were called to Carmel Road for a car crash. When police got to the scene, they found a 2011 Honda Accord that had run off the road, hit a pole, and then a tree.
MEDIC was called and pronounced the driver dead on the scene.

During the beginning of their investigation, CMPD learned that the Honda was driving southwest on Carmel Road when the driver lost control and ran off the right side of the road. Police have not released the official cause of the crash but believe speed was a factor.
On Tuesday, CMPD identified the victim in the crash as 21-year-old Kevin Asael Mendoza.
