HUNTERSVILLE, N.C. — Two dogs died after a house caught fire Thursday evening in Huntersville.

Firefighters got to the home on Glenfurness Drive and saw heavy flames shooting through the roof.

The homeowners were not there at the time, but when they returned home, they saw that the structure was a total loss.

"Keep them in your thoughts/prayers. #OneTownOneTeam," the Huntersville Fire Department tweeted.

Neighbors said the flames were so high they could be seen from the highway. Some were concerned the fire might spread to homes nearby.

"Me and my sister were standing out here and honestly it's heartbreaking (because) it could happen to any of us,” neighbor Anna Diggs said. “It takes a candle, a bad electric outlet or whatever it was."

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
